In Honmon Butsuryu Shu 本門佛立宗 (HBS), we chant the Odaimoku 御題目, Namumyohorengekyo 南無妙法蓮華経 repeatedly as our main practice. This practice is called Kusho-gyo 口唱行 (reciting practice). Kusho 口唱 means that you chant the Odaimoku loudly and clearly and Gyo 行 means “a practice.” When chanting the Odaimoku, we look at the Gohonzon 御本尊, the living object of worship, on which the same Namumyohorengekyo is written. Through the Kusho-gyo, our voice of chanting the Odaimoku reaches the Gohonzon and it responds as if we talk to the Buddha directly and He answers us. Through this Kusho-gyo, a practicer accumulates Kudoku 功徳 (the merit of Buddhahood) and his or her prayers are answered thanks to the Kudoku. Followers of HBS receive various kinds of manifest evidence; mental and physical disorders that doctors already gave up are cured, schoolwork or business is picked up, misfortunes and calamities are averted, and so on.
The Odaimoku that HBS preaches is just like a “cure-all” for every kind of disease or distress. Chanting the Odaimoku solves problems that people in the modern world tend to have. This symbolizes that the HBS’s Odaimoku is the true teaching of Buddhism, which can save all people in this world.
Moreover, Kusho-gyo is the easiest practice that everyone can do and doesn’t need any knowledge of Buddhist doctrine or how to recite difficult sutras. Anyone from children to elderly people can practice Kusho-gyo, so HBS priests and members do it together in every Buddhist service.
People who never practiced Kusho-gyo—practice of chanting the Odaimoku—as a member of HBS would naturally doubts that prayers are answered with such an easy practice. However, only people who actually have done the practice can realize the importance of Kusho-gyo and how much great the merit of Namumyohorengekyo is! Therefore, keeping down your doubt and moving into action with belief in the Odaimoku’s power are the shortcut to realizing them.
Let’s see step by step why HBS adopts the Kusho-gyo as a main practice and concludes chanting the Odaimoku is the best and only way to attain Buddhahood.
The Odaimoku, Namumyohorengekyo is just like a magic word, which is revealed in the Buddhist sutra called the Lotus Sutra. Next, why don’t we see what kind of Buddhist sutras the Lotus Sutra is?
